Semiotics Analysis

Every ad we see connotes something different and that is based how we were raised and see things.
Most ads today try to sell us a product but on top of that they try to sell a lifestyle with it. For example in the 2008 Jaguar XJ TV commercial: Gorgeous

We see that Jaguar tried to make this commercial sexy and sleek. You can see that flashy lights and fast cuts, making it very exciting to watch. There is scene where the car and a man is on a catwalk and that can mean that if you buy this car you will be popular and look rich. This commercial is aimed towards the males who want this lifestyle and that they need this car.

Another way ads use semiotics is in print advertisements. In this ad by Ford, they ad denotes the fact that you can make the mustang customizable to your own taste.

As you can see the wheels and engine looks hand drawn which makes you think the possibilities are endless. They are trying to sell the car as a whole but at the same time telling you to customize your mustang so that you can enter the contest and win. The background looks like an open air field where you can drive this car to its' full potential. There are also other mustangs in the back which also looks customized.

And finally another form of semiotics we see each and everyday as we are driving are ads outdoors. Billboards and signs are everywhere and they all try to advertise something. Here is an ad by Ben and Jerrys Icecream: 

When we first look at this ad we can see the big bold word Family Farms and to us this connotes that it is all natural. The picture of the cows and the farm in the background pouring out of the ben and jerry's ice cream tube suggest to us that they get their ingredients fresh and they is nothing added to it. We can also see from the picture that there is a kite and also the clouds are being hung by string suggesting that the ice cream is very light. Many ads today contain a lot of hidden connotative meanings which can be both stereotypically and culturally. It depends on who we are and how we make sense of the ad.
