What are some major advantages and disadvantages of nostalgia marketing?
Some major advantages of nostalgia marketing is that you will make your audience think about their childhood or past when they had a good time. When you introduce a product that will click some old memories that the customer had then this will spark their interest in your product. For example, the Toyota AE86 or the Sprinter Trueno was introduced in 1983. Toyota introduced this car which only had 112 hp and rear-wheel drive. This may not be something you think will last for a long time but somehow it did, mainly due to how good the car handled and the way it can take corners very easily. Even though it didn't have much power, it was still a great car to learn how to drive also a fun car to drive.
With the popularity that the Trueno had over the years, Toyota decided to resurrect the AE86 by introducing the Toyota Scion FR-S GT86 in 2012. This car is more eye pleasing than the old AE86 but it is still rear-wheel drive and with not much horse-power. Toyota could not have done this without the help of the company Subaru. Toyota wanted to build an engine that was better than the old AE86 but they didn't have the technology to do it so they collaborated with Subaru. Therefore both companies came out with their own version of the car the Scion FR-S and the Subaru BRZ.
Are there some products or brands for which this strategy may not be successful? Why not?
With Toyota being successful with bringing back the AE86, sometimes there are some disadvantages nostalgia advertising. When some companies use nostalgia advertising, they have to be careful because their company might have a bad past. Making the companies think about your companies past is really bad because they will think about what they don't like about it and it will make them lose interest in the product you are trying to sell. Companies that have to deal with electronics or technology will have a hard time using this strategy because their audience is always looking for something new and doesn't want to look back at old technology. These company will always have to think of something new to keep their company moving forward.
