Stereotypes in Ads
Stereotyping in advertisements has been around for a very long time and we can see many stereotypes in our ads today. There are some commercials where the stereotype is hard to see but others are pretty obvious. Racial advertisements are definitely not a thing of the past since we see many hidden messages in ads we see today. Here is an ad where the racism is clear but we are not sure what the message is.
This is a billboard ad from Playstation in 2006 where the new portable white psp came out. The ad clearly shows the white women holding the black women aggressively. I am not sure what they mean by "white is coming" maybe they mean that the whites are coming back to keep the black people in check and that white people are still better than blacks. We may never know but the company did say this, "The marketing campaign for the launch of the White PSP in the Benelux focuses on the contrast between the Black PSP model and the new Ceramic white PSP model. All of the 100 or so images created for the campaign have been designed to show this contrast in colors of the PSPs, and have no other message or purpose."
Advertisers take the risk everyday when they design their ads because they are putting the reputation of their company on the line. I believe that Advertisers do have ethical responsibilities when they are designing because they have to choose who the ad is going to be aimed towards and what they want to show. They also need to decide if they want their message clear or hidden.
